چکیده

Although exposure to creosote1 was recognized 35 years ago as a carcinogenic hazard to man (5), it is only recently that its carcinogenic effect on mice has been noted and investigated. Cabot et al. (4) observed that tumors developed more rapidly in mice treated with a basic fraction of creosote oil and benzpyrene concurrently than in mice treated with benzpyrene alone. Woodhouse (13) found creosote a more potent carcinogen than a number of petroleum fractions tested. While the experiments reported here were carried out, Poel and Kammer (8) and Lijinsky, Saffiotti, and Shubik (7) demonstrated the carcinogenicity of creosote for mouse skin. In the present paper the carcinogenicity of creosote for mouse skin is confirmed, and its ability to initiate tumor formation when applied for a limited period prior to croton oil treatment is demonstrated.

The carcinogenicity of creosote oil: the induction of lung tumors in mice.

ment of skin tumors in untreated mice (18) and also increased the susceptibility of mice to the in duction of skin tumors (5). Therefore, creosote was tested and found both to increase the percentage of mice bearing lung tumors and the number of ade nomas borne by individual mice over the control level. In the first experiment creosote was applied to the skin of weanling mice repeatedly in quan...

EFFECT OF IRON OVERLOAD ON 7, 12-DIMETHYLBENZ (A) ANTHRACENE-INDUCED SKIN TUMORIGENESIS

Iron overload is known to occur in the West European and American population due to the consumption of iron-rich diets. On the other hand, genetic disorders leading to iron overload are also known. Iron overload leads to increased peroxidation and disruptive disintegration of lipid-rich membranes, and predisposes humans for an enhanced risk of cancer induction. In experimental animals iron ...

On the role of croton oil in tumor formation.

The ability of croton oil to elicit epithelial tu mors in mice in areas previously treated with subcarcinogenic amounts of carcinogenic hydrocar bons is a well documented fact. In the typical ex periment tumors are initiated in the skin of mice by the single application of a solution of some car cinogenic hydrocarbon at a level that induces few if any tumors. The repeated application of croton ...

Ambivalent Effects of Atorvastatin on Angiogenesis, Epidermal Cell Proliferation and Tumorgenesis in Animal Models

Background: A growing body of preclinical data indicates that statins may possess antineoplastic properties however, some studies have raised the possibility that statins may also have carcinogenic potential. Methods: An air pouch model was used for angiogenesis. Single or multiple applications of croton oil on the back of Swiss albino mice with or without initiation by dimethylbenz(a)antherace...

Carcinogenicity studies of Estonian oil shale soots.

Several series of chronic experiments in white mice and white rats were carried out in order to determine the carcinogenicity of Estonian oil shale soot as well as the soot from oil shale fuel oil. All the investigated samples of soot showed a relatively low (from 14 to 1200 ppm) benzo(a)pyrene content. The benzene extract of oil shale soot, painted on the skin of white mice, proved to be stron...
